Moving oil and gas from the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) to markets is a physical puzzle played out across Dominion Land Survey (DLS) cadastral coordinates. The big arteries are the TC Energy NGTL gas system, the Trans Mountain Expansion (TMX) crude line to the coast, and the Alliance Pipeline. Their takeaway capacity — how much volume the pipes can actually move — is the real bottleneck, and I built a browser-based Leaflet GIS platform that maps rid corridors and live telemetry in real time, so operators stop wrestling with clunky desktop GIS to answer one simple question: where can my product get out?

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1. The Bottleneck: Western Canada produces more than its pipes can export. Takeaway capacity on rid corridors like NGTL and TMX decides which price a barrel fetches — and right now, there is more product than pipe.

2. The Tool: I built 5M Grid, a browser-native Leaflet GIS platform, to overlay pipeline corridors (TC Energy NGTL, Trans Mountain TMX, Alliance), DLS cadastral grids, and regional telemetry onto one coordinate reference — so the answer to "what is constrained?" is visible at a glance.

3. Why It Matters: Legacy desktop GIS is slow, locked to one machine, and built for specialists. A fast browser map with real flow data moves the decision out of the GIS department and onto the operator's field tablet.

Western Canada’s Pipes, in Plain English

Years ago, while I was writing strategic analyses for the energy sector, I kept coming back to one frustrating theme: the data was all public, but finding it meant jumping between clunky tools and filing-cabinet-grade spreadsheets. Nobody was putting the pipes on a map you could just open.

So I started drilling into how the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) actually moves product. The answer is a small number of big arteries:

TC Energy’s NGTL is the giant natural-gas gathering and delivery system that runs across the basin and feeds exports. Trans Mountain (TMX) is the crude pipeline that finally gives Western Canadian oil a reliable route to the West Coast tidewater. Alliance carries gas straight south to US markets. Together, they’re the country’s energy vascular system.

The thing that decides whether a barrel or a cubic foot of gas gets a good price isn’t geology — it’s takeaway capacity. Pipeline, in other words. When the pipe is full, price falls to the floor, and there’s nothing a well operator can do about it except know it’s coming.

That question is dead simple to ask and shockingly hard to answer quickly on legacy software. Which brings me to why I build the tools the industry should be using.

I built 5M Grid as a browser-native Leaflet GIS platform precisely so nobody has to install a desktop application to see where the pipes and the leases are. The honest answer: because the old tools are slow and gatekept. A browser-based Leaflet map renders instantly, needs no install, and runs on a field tablet. When the pipe is the constraint, you don’t have time to wait for a desktop app to start.

What Capacity Constraints Are Worth

Here’s the cold math behind why pipeline visibility matters. When takeaway is tight, producers take price discounts — sometimes steep ones — because in a basin, constrained product has nowhere else to go and the market knows it.

The gap between a full pipe and an empty pipe isn’t a rounding error. It shows up as a real, measurable swing in realized prices, and it depends on exactly where your product sits on the DLS grid and which corridor it connects to.

The point is not that this is sophisticated — it isn’t. The point is that for decades, seeing it required expensive licences and desktop installs. A browser map removes that barrier entirely. That’s the disruption: not new physics, just the same physics, finally visible without a gatekeeper.

  • No GIS degree required: The coordinate math is done for you, so a landman talks to a corridor, not a CRS string.

The Moat Was the Tool, Not the Data

The data in the WCSB was always public. What was scarce was a fast, approachable window into it. Once the pipes, the leases, and the wells sit together on an interactive Leaflet GIS canvas with real DLS coordinates, the expensive desktop barrier stops being a feature and starts looking like overhead.

For operators, the payoff is concrete: know your takeaway, know your corridor, and stop issuing bids in the dark. For everyone else, the takeaway is broader — the tools that gatekeep industry data are becoming optional, and that changes the whole pricing conversation.
